Why do diamonds chip?
There are 2 characteristics of gemstones that determine durability. They are hardness and toughness. Hardness is the ability of a gemstone to resist scratching. Toughness is the ability to resist chipping or breaking. A diamond is very hard and will not scratch but it is not a very tough gemstone. That’s why if a diamond is knocked hard or forced against another diamond it is possible to chip or break it.
