What makes white gold white?
Gold that is made into jewelry is alloyed with other metals to make it 10kt, 14kt etc. These other metals, copper, silver, zinc and nickel also give gold its color. Most alloys contain copper and zinc. White gold gets its color from nickel. For example 14kt white gold is made up of about 24% copper, 8.7% zinc and 9% nickel. Yellow gold does not contain nickel. 14kt Yellow gold contains about 31.6% copper, 5% silver and 1.9% zinc. Increasing the copper content in an alloy will produce Red or Rose gold. Increasing the Silver content will produce an alloy with a green color.
